The Wolfburn distillery in the northern Highlands was opened in January 2013. The still relatively young distillery names the Wolfburn Morven whisky after the nearby 868-metre-high Morven mountain in the Scottish county of Caithness and depicts it on the elaborate label of the down-to-earth bottle design. The Morven whisky is the distillery’s first single malt bottling and differs significantly from its two siblings in that it is made from 100% lightly peated malt. The most northerly mainland distillery in Scotland thus brings a slightly smoky single malt whisky to the market, which is well worth trying despite its young age!

The distillate made from lightly peated barley malt matures for four years in classic ex-bourbon barrels on the distillery premises before being bottled at a full 46% vol. Despite the high alcohol content, the whisky is bottled without chill-filtration and is allowed to present itself in its natural color in the bottle. The young distillery thus underlines its idealism for uncompromising quality. Distillation, storage and bottling are carried out entirely in-house.
Aroma
The Wolfburn Morven whisky has a clear, mild smoky aroma. Ripe fruit also characterizes the aroma, which is complemented by slightly salty notes such as sea air.
Taste
The taste shows a good balance between spicy, sweet, smoky and mild notes. Vanilla and cereals dominate at the beginning, before light smoke with exotic spices such as turmeric emerge.
Finish
The finish is medium-long and characterized by spicy freshness and a little fruit. A smoky note extends the finish and allows the whisky to linger.
