Description
Balvenie STORIES 27 Years Old A Rare Discovery from Distant Shores is a limited-edition 27-year-old Speyside single malt Scotch whisky, bottled at 48 per cent, in a 0.7-litre bottle and presented in an elaborately designed gift box. This bottling forms part of The Balvenie Stories Collection, which combines the personal experiences of long-serving employees at the distillery in Dufftown with exceptional whisky creations. The inspiration for this edition came from Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE and his long-standing friend and colleague John Barrett. Barrett once brought a sample of the now highly sought-after Caroni rum from Trinidad to the distillery’s sample room, thereby laying the foundations for an extraordinary cask experiment.
To bring this to fruition, The Balvenie had rare Caroni rum casks shipped to Scotland, in which the full-bodied rum had previously been matured for ten years in Trinidad. David Stewart ultimately decided to fill these special casks with a 20-year-old Balvenie Single Malt and allow it to mature further. After a total of 27 years’ maturation, this resulted in ‘A Rare Discovery from Distant Shores’, which deliberately combines the typical Balvenie style with the intense influence of the now-closed Caroni Distillery. Due to the limited quantity of whisky, the bottling was intended to be available for a period of just two years. The packaging also reflects this history: a bespoke illustration by British artist Andy Lovell depicts David Stewart in his Sample Room, making this limited edition particularly appealing to collectors of exceptional Balvenie whiskies with a rum cask finish.
Tasting NoteColour: Dark gold to amber.
Nose: Rich and complex with dark sweetness, muscovado sugar and Manuka honey, accompanied by ripe fruit, molasses and intense oak notes.
Palate: Full-bodied, opulent and complex with honey, dark sugar and ripe fruit, combined with the robust, characterful influence of the rare Caroni rum casks.
Finish: Long-lasting, rich and warming, with dark sweetness, honey, spicy cask notes and lingering rum accents.
The Balvenie 27 Years Old A Rare Discovery from Distant Shores is best served neat at room temperature in a nosing or tulip glass. A few drops of still water, if desired, can reveal further facets of this long-matured single malt. Suitable accompaniments include mature hard cheeses, roasted walnuts or pecans, whilst for desserts, dark chocolate, crème brûlée, caramel desserts or creations featuring honey and dried fruit complement its character well. Due to its 27-year maturation, the rare Caroni rum casks and its limited availability, this Balvenie bottling is of particular interest to whisky collectors, for exclusive tastings and special anniversaries.
