Penfolds MAX’S Chardonnay 2019 13.5% ABV 0.75l
£21.86
The Penfolds MAX’S Chardonnay 2019, 13.5% ABV, in a 0.75-litre bottle, pays homage to the legendary chief oenologist Max Schubert, who played a decisive role in shaping the traditional Australian winery Penfolds from 1948 to 1975. His uncompromising pursuit of the highest quality laid the foundations for the estate’s global reputation and continues to inspire the MAX’S wine range to this day. This Australian Chardonnay from the renowned Adelaide Hills combines modern elegance with Penfolds’ unmistakable style and impressively demonstrates the potential of South Australia’s cool high-altitude vineyards.
Despite low rainfall, the 2019 vintage benefited from optimal soil moisture reserves and a long, balanced ripening process. This allowed the Chardonnay grapes to retain their varietal aromas and a lively, natural acidity. Following vinification, the wine was aged in French barriques, 30 per cent of which were new, their influence blending harmoniously into the overall structure. The result is a multi-layered Chardonnay from Australia that combines freshness, creaminess and minerality in perfect balance. Its elegant structure and subtle complexity make it an exceptional drinking experience, whether enjoyed with food or on its own.
Tasting NoteIn the glass, the Penfolds MAX’S Chardonnay 2019 displays a pale straw-yellow colour with delicate lime-green highlights. On the nose, aromas of nectarine, peach, cashew, chestnuts and almond nougat unfold, along with subtle hints of apple blossom and jasmine. On the palate, there are notes of juicy peach, subtle mandarin and a creamy texture reminiscent of crème brûlée and panna cotta. An elegant minerality lends the wine freshness and depth. The finish is complex, finely balanced and exceptionally long-lasting.
Acidity: 6.7 g/l
The Penfolds MAX’S Chardonnay 2019 pairs superbly with pan-fried fish, lobster, scallops, prawns, as well as creamy pasta dishes and white poultry. This elegant Chardonnay from the Adelaide Hills is also an excellent match for veal, mushroom dishes or mildly matured soft cheeses. Served at a temperature of around 10–12 °C, it reveals its full aromatic complexity and elegant structure.
