Olde English 800 in the new big 42 oz. bottle: a classic of hip hop culture from the USA. The malt liquor is slightly stronger than your usual Pilsner or Lager at a drinking strength of 5.9%, but still has a great malty character. Before you begin to miss the old standard 40 oz. bottle, the new bottles are pretty genius as they come with this special “cold when blue” banderol. This thing which is right above the label tells you when your Olde English is at the right drinking temperature. Just pop it in the fridge and wait for the banderol to turn blue.
Olde English already exists since 1969, only 10 years later the brand was bought by the Pabst Brewing Company. The company started to market the beer to a younger and trendy crowd. Another 10 years later, many Afro and Latin Americans were drinking Olde English, from NYC to the West Coast. It was then that the legendary rap group N.W.A. published their album “The Posse” with the band holding Olde English bottles on the cover. What followed where more rappers loving the beer and movies such as “Boyz N The Hood” and “Menace II Society” where Olde English could be scene in many scenes. Today, Olde English 800 is a s popular as it could be – no wonder, because the tall 42oz. bottles are great to bring along to hang out with friends at the park, on the corner or wherever you want to enjoy it in company.
