The distillery has been part of Diageo (formerly Distillers Company Limited) since 1927, after several shutdowns and changes of ownership. Today, Caol Ila produces most of the Islay whisky in terms of quantity, with most of the production later being found in smoky Scotch blends (Johnnie Walker, for example).

The scent of Caol Ila 12 years is slightly burnt and peaty, which gives pleasure to the first smoky silt. The smell goes through several levels. First the peaty character comes to light, then Caol Ila quickly becomes lush and fruity for 12 years. The nuances are reminiscent of grapes and currants, accompanied by subtle citrus. The finish is a spicy nosing, with cloves and nutmeg dominating.

After a sip, the smoke forms the most concise note, whereby the beginning is rather sweet. Then, in addition to fruity notes, there are always salty tones.
