This astounding potato vodka burst onto the scene in 2014, when it became an instant hit and netted what is arguably the most prestigious prize in booze – the Best of Show award in the vodka category at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Unlike most vodkas, Woody Creek is made from potatoes, which are a much more expensive ingredient to use in distilling vodka than wheat or rice, but they result in a drink which is smooth, rich, and delicious.
Woody Creek use potatoes grown on their own ranch and in local farmland, like the Rio Grande russet, Chepita and Lady Claire varieties which are specialised for growing at high altitudes. This means that they produce vodka only when the raw ingredients are available – so that’s during the potato harvest season from September to November. The vodka is distilled just once, in order to preserve its distinctive, sweet taste, which has flavours of vanilla and cream with a hefty body and delicate nose. It’s far too good for shooting or mixing, so enjoy sipping this vodka neat for the best experience.
