Description

The Bitter Truth Bogart’s Bitters 42.1% ABV 0.35 l + GB is a historically accurate and superbly crafted replica of 19th-century-style cocktail bitters, playing a key role in the history of classic bar culture. This exceptional bottling is produced by The Bitter Truth, an internationally renowned producer of authentic bar bitters and classic cocktail ingredients. Bogart’s Bitters is considered the first bitters ever to be mentioned by name and was referenced as early as 1862 in the first cocktail book in history, written by Jerry Thomas, an icon of the first golden age of cocktails.

Although no original bottles from Jerry Thomas’s era have survived, it is widely accepted that Bogart’s was a contemporary variant of Boker’s Bitters. Even before other bitters found their way into cocktail recipes worldwide, Bogart’s/Boker’s was the definitive standard. As early as 1888, the first printed Martini cocktail recipe explicitly called for the use of “genuine Bogart’s/Boker’s”, which points to its enormous popularity and the existence of inferior imitations. Over a period of more than ten years, The Bitter Truth has conducted extensive research and analysis, based on an extremely rare original bottle from around 1900 containing authentic contents. The historic “Lady-Leg” bottle made of brown glass, along with the original label, has been faithfully reproduced, emphasising the museum-quality character of this edition. The high-quality gift box perfectly complements the collector’s and presentation value of this bottling.

Tasting NoteColour: Deep dark brown, dense and concentrated.

The Bitter Truth Bogart’s Bitters is an indispensable ingredient in classic cocktail recipes and is ideal for historic drinks such as the Martini Cocktail, Old Fashioned, Manhattan, Improved Whisky Cocktail or early gin-based classics. This aromatic bitter pairs particularly well with rye whisky, bourbon, dry gin, aged rum or classic vermouth styles. It also lends depth, structure and authentic historical flavour to modern cocktail interpretations featuring sherry, port or full-bodied spirits, making it an essential tool for discerning bars and classic cocktail concepts.
