Description

The Ardbeg Anamorphic is a limited and experimental bottling from the famous Islay distillery Ardbeg, which dares to take a completely new approach to maturation and flavour development with its unconventional cask treatment. This special creation comes from the pen of Dr Bill Lumsden, Director of Distillation & Whisky Creation at Ardbeg, who was inspired for this edition by the principle of anamorphosis – a technique in which the true form is only revealed through the right perspective.

For the production of Ardbeg Anamorphic, conventional ex-bourbon casks were treated in a newly defined process: The barrel lids were removed and deeply scored to significantly increase the surface area of the wood. The barrels were then burnt to a “high mocha” degree, creating intense roasted flavours and giving the whisky a complex, deep aroma spectrum during its maturation.

The result is a multi-layered Islay single malt that combines the four characteristic Elements of Ardbeg – sweetness, smokiness, herbal spice and spiciness – in an exciting interplay. Bottled at 48.2% vol., non-chill-filtered and uncoloured, this bottling offers an intense taste experience that combines classic Ardbeg qualities with innovative cask art.

Tasting NoteColour: Natural gold.

Nose: Dense and seductive with smoke, dark chocolate, burnt caramel, liquorice, citrus notes and a hint of medicinal herbs.

Flavour: Powerful and structured with smoked toffee, mocha, sweet wood smoke, spice, dried herbs and peppery heat.

Finish: Langs, warm and aromatic with charred wood, salt, cloves and an elegant film of smoke.

The Ardbeg Anamorphic unfolds its full potential neat at room temperature in a nosing glass. A few drops of water can help to open up the complex flavours even more deeply – the combination of sweet roasted aromas and powerful smoke in particular then emerges more clearly. Ideal for Islay fans looking for the unexpected and for collectors of experimental whiskies who appreciate depth, innovation and expressiveness.
